#Gabon: The rights of indigenous peoples discussed on the sidelines of the 69th UN General Assembly in New York

NEW YORK (AGP) - The issue of indigenous peoples was the focus Tuesday high-level talks on the sidelines of the 69th United Nations General Assembly which opens officially on Thursday in New York (United States) where the head of the Gabonese State, Ali Bongo Ondimba also plays an active role from the beginning of the week.

A plenary meeting of High Level is also held at the headquarters of the institution in the following preliminary work begun on September 16. Menu trade, the issue of indigenous peoples. The tendency of interventions has been to advocate for the protection and promotion of the rights of indigenous peoples, whether Indian Latin American or African pygmy.

Trade, committed in the presence of the Secretary General of the UN Ban Ki-Moon, are designed to enable indigenous peoples to realize their rights in accordance with the UN Declaration on the issue. Ali Bongo Ondimba, who takes an active part in the work of this session should take place on Thursday before the United Nations.

Under the theme of the 69th session, namely 'make and implement a transformative agenda for the post-2015', it is not excluded that the head of state looks back on the way traveled in the implementation of the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) adopted in 2000, in a previous session of the UN.

The Goals held in this: reduce poverty and hunger; ensure universal primary education; promote gender equality and empower women; reduce child mortality; improve maternal health; fight disease; sustainable human environment and, finally, develop a global partnership for development.

The fact is that the results are encouraging as regards the achievement of these goals. Certainly, the growth has not garnered had a significant impact on poverty, but the enrollment rate (about 96.6%) is significantly interesting, for example.

But the concern of the participants in this UN session is less to the review of the MDGs as a glimpse of another world development program, which is ambitious and more focused on issues related to the preservation of the environment. We now speak of Sustainable Development Goals. The head of state was to take part yesterday in a high-level meeting on climate change, with other African leaders. It is about agreeing on a common platform for the climate summit which opens today (cemardi), alongside the sitting of the 69th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations. Gabon, we know, is a leader in the preservation of the environment, given the actions in this area, creating a Gabonese agency warning and space observation, develop a climate plan , creation of protected areas. On Tuesday, the Gabonese president received the American General Jones, who was accompanied by Admiral David Mercer and Mr. Ahmed Charat. Similarly, it has currency with Dr. Weigh Pham and Rachel Pearson.

Moreover, Ali Bongo Ondimba participated last Sunday, soon after his arrival in New York Forum, inspiration of the New York Libreville Africa that is home for the past three years. The theme of the New York Forum focused on the impact of climate change on economies around the world.
